Data Breaches in the U.S. Increase 47 Percent in 2008 (Click for full article)

The Identity Theft Resource Center, a San Diego-based non-profit group that monitors identity theft, reported 656 data breaches in 2008. This is an increase of 47 percent since the 2007 statistics reported 446 data breaches. The resource center also stated not all of the data breaches for 2008 were reported. This makes it difficult to determine all of the additional thousands or millions of personal data breaches for the year.

A data breach takes place when personal information such as Social Security numbers, bank accounts or credit card information is accessed by someone who does not have clearance as is the case with paper thefts or computer hacking.

The Identity Theft Resource Center report stated 82 percent of  the breaches were computer hacking and 18 percent were due to paper theft. Mason Finks, the Fraud Protection Coordinator for the 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office in Aurora , Colorado , stated the big problem has been paper identity theft because of how easy it is for a criminal to access paper files at the local level.

A data breach is a data breach whether or not a business is victim to computer hacking or paper theft. Once again, business must be compliant with the laws regarding personal data protection. Contracting secure information destruction vendors will allow for a decrease in legal repercussions and data breaches to non-compliant businesses.

Bags to Bales, Sarasota Document Shredding Continues to Provide the Best Shredding Services to South West Florida

Reputation often plays a bigger part these days than location for local Sarasota businesses, and Sarasota Document Shredding is no exception. Located at the far end of Mariotti Court off Clark Road, Sarasota Document Shredding is truly a gem requiring GPS services to find. Once you find the store however, it won’t be a location you’ll soon forget.

Family owned and run for over 7 years, Sarasota Document Shredding began with a single shredder in a room in Venice, Florida. Kathleen Wahl, soon to be daughter in law of one of the company’s owners, explains:

“They started off at a place in Venice, where a guy had a shredder. They would bring the paper back there and would shred everything up into little bags”, she said.

After about six months however, they moved to their current location in Mariotti Court. The company was founded by former police officers looking for a way to continue providing protection and safety services for the community, and, as Wahl put it “ . . . to keep everyone safe”.

As the only shredding company in Sarasota to offer on-site, off-site, and walk-in services, they have established trust within the community, and also guarantee 20% lower prices than any other shredding business. Typically 10-15 people use their walk-in services every day. Many customers are surprised by the ease of safely discarding personal papers after having battled their own home shredder.

“The typical response is ‘Oh my gosh I had no idea you guys were here, this is so fast, so easy, I’m never going to use my shredder at home again. “ Wahl said.

The store is home to a 40 horse power, $40,000 industrial strength shredder that takes up to 300 sheets at a time. The machine can also shred anything from cardboard to license plates to scissors, even wrenches. The machine can also handle a variety of electronics, including hard drives and entire laptops.

Once a customer’s paper has been shredded it is collected into 1,000-pound bales then stacked to await recycling. Each bale recycled saves 12 trees! One logged tree only yields approximately 16.7 reams. That means that each of the 1,000-pound bales Sarasota Documents Shredding is recycling produces over 200 reams of paper! Every year the bales accumulated and recycled equal around 700 tons of paper.

Sarasota Document Shredding also has a sister company in Arizona, called Premier Document Shredding.

Equipped with an industrial 40-horse power machine expertly handling 700 tons a year, you can’t go wrong with Sarasota Document Shredding.
